Get a free copy of Rainbow Analyst Personal
The product illustrated on our other pages is Rainbow Analyst Professional, a fully-featured audit tool intended for use by financial modellers and other professional spreadsheet users. However, if all you need is a more basic add-in for casual or home use, then Rainbow Analyst Personal may be the right answer for you.
Rainbow Analyst Personal has many of the key functions of the Professional version, such as Formula Groups, Cell Dependencies and Trace Links. However it lacks other key features such as the Summary Report and the Cell Inspector, as well as some mapping and reporting functions. It also has a much more basic user interface than the Professional version. For details see the Personal version User Guide or our comparative functionality table.
Rainbow Analyst Personal is available completely free of change for personal and non-commercial use. You can
- download your free copy (711KB, right-click then click on ‘Save Target As’ or ‘Save Link As’) and then follow the installation instructions given later on this page.
Or a free trial copy of Rainbow Analyst Professional
If you work with spreadsheets in a professional capacity, then we recommend that you use Rainbow Analyst Professional as illustrated on other pages. You can download a fully-functional 30-day free trial copy, and if you then decide to purchase a licence or upgrade from a previous version (see details below), you will be sent a licence key which will convert your free trial copy into a fully licensed copy. Otherwise your free trial copy will simply stop functioning after 30 days (and you can then delete the file if you wish). There are two versions of Rainbow Analyst Professional; version 6.1 (for Microsoft Excel 2007 onwards) and version 5.1 (for earlier versions of Excel).
Rainbow Analyst Professional 6.1 is designed for use with Excel 2007 or 2010, and is fully integrated with Microsoft’s Ribbon (Office 2007 and 2010) interface. It has all the features illustrated on our Home, Features and Example pages, and detailed in the Version 6.1 User Guide. You can
- download your free trial copy of version 6.1 (702KB, right-click then click on ‘Save Target As’ or ‘Save Link As’) and then follow the installation instructions given below.
Note: If you are using Internet Explorer, you may find that it downloads the Rainbow version 6.1 file as Rainbow061.zip. You will need to rename the file back to Rainbow061.xlam before Excel will recognise it as an add-in. This problem does not occur in other browsers such as Firefox or Chrome.
Rainbow Analyst Professional 5.1 is intended for Excel 2000 to 2003 (though it can be used with Excel 2007 if needed). It has most but not all of the features illustrated on other pages; the differences between it and version 6.1 are listed in our comparative functionality table, and you can find more details in the Version 5.1 User Guide. You can
- download your free trial copy of version 5.1 (1,385KB, right-click then click on ‘Save Target As’ or ‘Save Link As’) and then follow the installation instructions given below.
If you subsequently decide to purchase a licence for either version 6.1 or version 5.1, a single user licence costs £99.00. A corporate site licence is also available, priced at £990.00 (or currency equivalent), with discounts for multiple sites.
Installation instructions
To install Rainbow Analyst after downloading, you will need to copy or move the downloaded add-in file (Rainbow061.xlam or Rainbow051.xla or Rainbow034.xla) into your Excel add-ins folder, and then activate it from within Excel. How you do this depends on what version of Excel you are using.
Microsoft Excel 2007 or 2010
If your computer’s operating system is Microsoft Windows Vista, your Excel add-ins folder is likely to be Computer \Local Disk (C:) \Users \[User Name] \AppData \Roaming \Microsoft \AddIns (substitute your Windows user name for [User Name]). You can check this from within Excel as follows:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button (the File tab in Excel 2010) and then click Excel Options.
- Click the Add-Ins category.
- In the Manage box, click Excel Add-Ins and then click Go.
- Click the Browse button.
- Click in the folder box near the top to see the full path to the add-ins folder.
After you have placed the downloaded Rainbow Analyst add-in file in your add-ins folder, you can activate it as follows:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button (the File tab in Excel 2010) and then click Excel Options.
- Click the Add-Ins category.
- In the Manage box, click Excel Add-Ins and then click Go.
- In the Add-Ins available box, select the check box next to Rainbow Analyst, and then click OK.
You will find there is now a Rainbow tab added to the Office Ribbon, from which all Rainbow version 6.1 functions can be accessed. (If you activate version 5.1 in Excel 2007 or 2010, you will find a Rainbow toolbar and a Rainbow menu in the Add-Ins tab.)
Earlier versions of Excel
Depending on your computer’s operating system, your Excel add-ins folder may be C:\Documents and Settings \[User Name] \Application Data \Microsoft \Addins. You can check this from within Excel by clicking Tools, Add-Ins, then clicking the Browse button, which will open a browse window in the add-ins folder. Click on the down arrow beside the folder name to see the full folder path.
After you have placed the downloaded Rainbow Analyst add-in file in your add-ins folder, you can activate it from within Excel by clicking Tools, Add-Ins. Then in the the Add-Ins available box, select the check box next to Rainbow Analyst, and then click OK.
You will find there is now a Rainbow toolbar and a Rainbow menu added to the standard worksheet menu bar, from which you can access the User Guide and all Rainbow’s functions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does Rainbow Analyst fail to load?
The most likely reason for this is that you need to adjust your macro security settings. The steps to do this in Excel 2007 or 2010 are as follows:
- Click the Microsoft Office Button (the File tab in Excel 2010) and then click Excel Options.
- Click the Trust Center category.
- Under Microsoft Office Excel Trust Center, click Trust Center Settings.
- Click the Add-Ins category.
- If there is a tick in any of the three checkboxes under this category, deselect the ticked option, and then click OK.
- Close and re-start Excel, and Rainbow Analyst should load and run as normal.
In earlier versions of Excel, the steps are as follows:
- Click on Tools, Macro, Security to bring up the Security dialogue box.
- Select the Trusted Sources tab.
- Select the check box labelled “Trust all installed add-ins and templates”, and then click OK.
- Close and re-start Excel, and Rainbow Analyst should load and run as normal.
Why do I get an “Error 1004″ message when I run the Summary Report?
This probably means that you are using Rainbow version 5.0 and you need to adjust your macro security settings.
- Click the Macro Settings category.
- Under Developer Macro Settings, select the check box labelled “Trust access to the VBA project object model”, and then click OK.
In earlier versions of Excel, the steps are as follows:
- Click on Tools, Macro, Security to bring up the Security dialogue box.
- Select the Trusted Sources tab.
- Select the check box labelled “Trust access to Visual Basic project”, and then click OK.
In Rainbow 5.1, instead of an error message, you will see a note that Visual Basic reporting has not been enabled. You can enable Visual Basic reporting by following the same steps as set out above.
Why is Rainbow version 5 slow to load the first time?
If you are upgrading from Rainbow Analyst version 3.4 to version 5.0 or later, the initial installation will take up to 30 seconds longer as Rainbow has to delete the version 3.4 toolbar, save a temporary copy of itself, and then reload. This is only necessary the very first time you install Rainbow version 5.
How do I uninstall Rainbow?
To uninstall Rainbow, simply delete the Rainbow add-in file from your Excel add-ins folder. Rainbow does not modify the Windows Registry or make any other changes to your system. If you are not sure which is your Excel add-ins folder, see the installation notes above to find out where this is.
