Get a free trial copy of Rainbow Analyst Professional
If you work with spreadsheets in a professional capacity, then we recommend that you use Rainbow Analyst Professional (Rainbow Pro) as illustrated on other pages. You can download a fully-functional 30-day free trial copy, and if you then decide to purchase a licence or upgrade from a previous version (see details below), you will be sent a licence key which will convert your free trial copy into a fully licensed copy. Otherwise your free trial copy will simply stop functioning after 30 days (and you can then delete the file if you wish).
Rainbow Analyst Professional 10 is designed for use with Excel versions from 2007 to 2016; it has its own tab on Microsoft’s Ribbon interface (with a choice of either Standard or Advanced menu), and it is compatible with both 32-bit and 64-bit Microsoft Office. It has all the features illustrated on our Home, Overview and Why Rainbow pages, and detailed in the Version 10 User Guide.
After downloading the Rainbow installer file, just double-click to run the installer and then follow the instructions to install Rainbow Pro for your copy of Excel. (Note: If Windows SmartScreen reports the download file as an “unrecognised application”, just click “More info” in the SmartScreen message, then click the “Run anyway” button.)
And if you work in an IT environment that does not allow you to download executable (program) files, then you can click the button below to download a version of the installer file that has been renamed “RainbowPro.exe.deletethis” so that it does not look like a program file.
After you have downloaded this renamed installer file, it should be shown in Windows Explorer as RainbowPro.exe.deletethis, and you can select (click) the file name and right-click, then click Rename in the pop-up menu. Delete the file extension (the “.deletethis” on the end of the file name) to change the file name to “RainbowPro.exe”, then press Enter, and click Yes if you receive a warning about changing file extensions. You can now double-click to run the installer and then follow the instructions to install Rainbow Pro for your copy of Excel.
If you subsequently decide to purchase a licence for version 10, we have a range of licensing options available, starting from £14.00 (or currency equivalent). We can also offer significant discounts for purchases of 10 or more licences; for further details please visit our Licensing page.
Or a free copy of Rainbow Analyst Personal
The product illustrated on our other pages is Rainbow Analyst Professional, a fully-featured audit tool intended for use by financial modellers and other professional spreadsheet users. However, if all you need is a more basic add-in for casual or home use, or if you need to use Rainbow Analyst with Excel 2000 or 2003, then Rainbow Analyst Personal may be the answer.
Rainbow Analyst Personal 5 has many of the key functions of the Professional version, such as Formula Groups, Cell Dependencies and Data Links. However it lacks other more advanced functions, including many of the features of the Map Risks function, and it also has a much more basic user interface than the Professional version. For details see the Personal version User Guide or our comparative functionality table.
Rainbow Analyst Personal is completely free for personal and non-commercial use. It is designed primarily for use with Excel 2000 and 2003, but it can also be used with Excel 2007 onwards (32-bit only), and it will appear inside the Add-Ins tab.
To install Rainbow Analyst after downloading, all you need to do is to double-click the downloaded installer file (RainbowPro.exe or Rainbow05P.exe), and click Run if there is a message asking “Do you want to run this file?”. The installer file will then extract and copy the Rainbow Analyst add-in file to your Excel add-ins folder, and activate the Rainbow add-in for your installed version of Microsoft Excel. Please note that you should not rename the installer file (or at least not until after you have run it), as doing so will cause Excel to attempt to load a non-existent add-in file.
Very occasionally the Rainbow installer file may be unable to activate the Rainbow add-in, and you will need to do this yourself. If you are using Excel 2007 or above, you will need to start Excel and then:
- Click the File tab (the Office Button in Excel 2007) and then click (Excel) Options.
- Click the Add-Ins category.
- In the Manage box, click Excel Add-Ins and then click Go.
- In the Add-Ins available box, select the check box next to Rainbow Pro or Rainbow Analyst Personal, and then click OK.
You will find there is now a Rainbow tab added to the Excel Ribbon (menu), from which all Rainbow Pro’s functions can be accessed. Or if you activate Rainbow Personal 5 in Excel 2007 onwards you will find a Rainbow toolbar and a Rainbow menu in the Add-Ins tab.
To activate Rainbow Personal 5 in earlier versions of Excel, you will need to start Excel and then click Tools, Add-Ins. Then in the the Add-Ins available box, select the check box next to Rainbow Analyst Personal, and then click OK. You will find there is now a Rainbow toolbar and a Rainbow menu added to the standard worksheet menu bar, from which you can access the User Guide and all Rainbow’s functions.
Rainbow add-in files
If you prefer to download the native Rainbow add-in files and copy them manually into your Excel add-ins folder, you can download them from here:
- Rainbow Pro 10.1
- Rainbow Pro 10.0
- Rainbow Pro 9.3
- Rainbow Pro 8.2
- Rainbow Analyst Professional 7.2
- Rainbow Analyst Personal
The exact location of your Excel add-ins folder depends on your computer’s operating system:
- If your computer runs Microsoft Windows 8 or 10, your Excel add-ins folder should be This PC > Windows (C:) > Users > [User Name] > AppData > Roaming > Microsoft > AddIns (substitute your Windows user name for [User Name]).
- If your computer runs Microsoft Windows Vista or Windows 7, your Excel add-ins folder should be Computer\ Local Disk (C:)\ Users\ [User Name]\ AppData\ Roaming\ Microsoft\ AddIns.
- If your computer runs Microsoft Windows XP, your Excel add-ins folder should be be C:\ Documents and Settings\ [User Name]\ Application Data\ Microsoft\ Addins.
If you cannot see the AppData folder under your user name folder, this means that you need to enable Windows to show hidden files and folders. In Windows Explorer, click Tools and then Folder Options (in Windows XP or Vista) or Organize and then Folder and search options (in Windows 7). In the Folder Options dialog box, click the View tab, then under Advanced settings, Hidden files and folders, click “Show hidden files, folders and drives”. Click OK, then close and reopen Windows Explorer, and you will see the AppData folder.
Once you have copied the Rainbow add-in file into your Excel add-ins folder, you will need to activate the Rainbow add-in from within Excel, as explained above (under Installation instructions).
